Community Project Day Sign Up
What is it?
On May 21st, 2025 Sanford is holding a Community Service/Project Day for ALL students. Students will spend most of the day (8:40-1:30) in their advisories doing community service and reflection. 6th and 7th grade advisory classes will be doing group service projects either at Sanford or in the neighborhood.
8th grade students can do their service action at home, continuing to work on their projects with their world studies teacher or helping out with the rest of their advisory. 8th graders can choose to return to Sanford at 1:30 and participate in a flex choice afternoon from 1:30-3:20. 8th grade families will hear more about this from their world studies teachers to get ideas on where they might sign up to volunteer.

Why do we do this special day each year?
Sanford Middle School is an authorized International Baccalaureate MYP school. As a cumulative experience at all MYP schools, students complete a community project to create change in our communities. 8th graders start this project in advisory and finish in World Studies class. In this project, 8th grade students identify a community problem, research it, create a solution plan and take action to create change. Finally, students reflect on the experience to bring together their academic, real world and social learning at Sanford into one final project. We scaffold this project in 6th & 7th grades to give kids service experiences before they have to select and plan their own.
How do we pay for these cool projects?
Funding for many of our Sanford projects comes from Random Acts but it doesn't not cover all of our expenses. If you would like to contribute, you can send change/cash/check to school with your child, and they can bring it to the main office labelled community project day. These funds will help pay for bussing and extra supplies that will get donated to local organizations such as Bridging, Children's Hospital, YouthLink, Sandwich Project, Gardening, Pennywars and Matter.
